Your perception of the problem frames the solution.

I have been struck in recent days by the way that US politics seems to have been driven to extremes. The current front runners for the democratic and republican nominations are both quite colourful characters with strongly held views. It is almost as if the ‘vanilla’ middle ground politics has caused a backlash, leading people to look for something different.

I was reminded of an old sales adage that I have used in sales training, that ‘the perception of the problem, frames the solution’. This basically means that if your car is constantly breaking down and you finally decide to buy a new one, when you go to garage, the first question is likely to be about reliability. The basic principle is therefore that if you see politicians as ‘all the same’ and their rhetoric is managed by spin doctors, a bit of plain speaking is quite refreshing!

How do you currently perceive the issues you are facing?
How might this be framing you views of the required solution?
What ‘extremes’ do you need to be wary of?
